Fintech titan Stripe has announced its return to facilitating cryptocurrency payments after a hiatus of six years. The company’s reentry begins with the acceptance of USDC stablecoins across the Solana, Ethereum, and Polygon blockchains, as reported by TechCrunch.

The news came from John Collison, the co-founder and president of Stripe, during the Connect developer conference in San Francisco. Collison underscored the enhanced stability and user experience associated with stablecoins, stating, “Stripe is bringing back crypto payments—this time with stablecoins, which are a way better experience.”

This move is part of Stripe’s broader strategy to expand its service offerings and foster integration with competing payment providers. By breaking away from its traditional walled garden approach, Stripe aims to offer customers increased flexibility and choice.

Stripe’s journey with cryptocurrency has been characterized by a delicate balance between innovation and stability. While the company has consistently sought to remain at the forefront of blockchain technology discussions, it has also prioritized reliability and responsibility in its financial operations. With a staggering $1 trillion in processed transactions last year and a current valuation of $65 billion, Stripe’s cautious approach to cryptocurrency reflects its commitment to maintaining its position as a trusted financial powerhouse.

In 2014, Stripe ventured into the realm of cryptocurrency with initial tests involving Bitcoin. However, due to Bitcoin’s volatility and limited suitability as a medium of exchange, the company discontinued its support for the pioneering digital currency in 2018, acknowledging its evolution into more of an asset than a practical payment method.

Stripe’s involvement with cryptocurrency took another turn in June 2019 when it became a founding member of the Libra project led by Facebook. Despite initial enthusiasm, Stripe and several other prominent companies withdrew their support for Libra within months, citing concerns. However, Stripe expressed openness to future collaboration with the Libra Association.

After a three-year hiatus, Stripe cautiously reembraced cryptocurrencies by enabling stablecoin payouts for Twitter users, which proved successful. This success has seemingly encouraged the company to explore further integration possibilities for cryptocurrencies.

In addition to Stripe, other payment companies have also embraced stablecoins for transactions. Last week, Singapore-based payments firm Triple-A announced plans to integrate PayPal’s stablecoin into its supported tokens for customer payments. As the first licensed crypto payments firm in Singapore, Triple-A aims to introduce support for PayPal’s stablecoin, PYUSD, by the end of June.

Currently, Triple-A primarily offers payment services in Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins issued by Tether and Circle. While Tether’s USDT remains the dominant stablecoin in the crypto market, with a circulation of approximately $110 billion, PYUSD, launched in August 2023, has a circulating supply of just over $200 million.
