Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has unveiled an ambitious vision to position the country as a worldwide hub for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector. In a strategic move, the UK government intends to introduce substantial AI scholarships and allocate more than $100 million towards an AI Taskforce.
For the sake of safety, the Prime Minister aims to secure early access to OpenAI and Google’s new Language Models (LLMs).At the core of this vision lies a blend of research, education, and global cooperation, marking a potentially groundbreaking milestone for the technological landscape of the United Kingdom.
Acknowledging the concerns surrounding AI technology, Sunak highlighted his dedication to spearheading safety research in the UK, striking a balance between his enthusiasm for the future and the potential risks involved. He recognized the significance of expert scientists expressing concerns about potential catastrophic outcomes, emphasizing the need to address these concerns.
In the announcement, Sunak stated, “I understand people’s concerns about AI, which is why we will conduct state-of-the-art safety research right here in the UK.” The objective is to guarantee the safe and responsible implementation of AI across various sectors within the country.
The government’s collaboration with AI giants like Google’s DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, offering early or priority access to their AI models for research and safety, has piqued interest. Yet, this partnership has also sparked some concerns and raised eyebrows.
The risks associated with excessive government oversight of AI models are becoming evident, primarily due to the potential institutionalization of biases inherent in these models. Additionally, the power dynamics between AI companies and governments raise concerns over the proper balance of authority.
The UK Government’s investment will be focused on two AI fellowships dedicated to solving pressing problems in crop supply and healthcare through technology.
“These new fellowships, along with all our work on AI so far, will help build a brighter future for you and your families,” said Sunak, emphasizing the human-centered approach to AI in the UK.
The government’s recent embrace of AI safety signifies a significant departure from its previous position. Previously, the government’s white paper adopted a pro-innovation standpoint regarding AI regulation and downplayed safety apprehensions.
