Semiconductor giant Nvidia has introduced a new gaming chip specifically tailored for the Chinese market, marking its first release since the imposition of US export controls on chip sales to China in October 2022.
The new chip, GeForce RTX 4090 D, promises enhanced performance, efficiency, and AI-driven graphics while ensuring compliance with US export regulations. Nvidia’s previous powerful chips, A800 and H800, along with the gaming chip RTX 4090, faced restrictions in the Chinese market. The RTX 4090 D, priced at 12,999 yuan ($1,842 USD), is set to be available from January 2024.
Nvidia emphasized its extensive engagement with the US government during the development of the RTX 4090 D, addressing concerns related to export controls. China represents a significant market for Nvidia, constituting over 90% of China’s $7 billion AI chip market.
Despite export bans, Nvidia reported record Q3 revenue of $18 billion, citing generative AI as a major contributor to the remarkable performance.
The strategic move by Nvidia reflects the challenges posed by US export controls, prompting the company to adapt to the evolving regulatory landscape.
As China explores avenues to overcome export restrictions and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor industry, Nvidia’s China-focused chip launch underscores the intricate dynamics of the AI chip market in the face of geopolitical considerations.
