Nigeria has launched a government-led initiative to train 1,000 citizens annually in cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. Announced on July 23 by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Jigawa, the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative aims to position Nigeria as a leader in digital transformation in Africa. Shettima stated:

“We are not just catching up with the world; we are set to surpass it. This initiative will enable beneficiaries to join a global workforce and drive the innovation that will shape our future.”

Nigeria Unveils Grants to Boost Enterprise Growth

The Nigerian government, in collaboration with tech company Gluwa, will train 1,000 Nigerians each year in artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other technologies.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also announced a financial grant of 150,000 Nigerian nairas ($90) for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to encourage the growth of a local fintech ecosystem.

Nigeria’s Strategy for Tech Dominance

The initiative to train 1,000 Nigerians annually is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to accelerate development. Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized:

“We are implementing this initiative nationwide to build a network of tech hubs that will drive Nigeria’s economic growth for years to come.”

Earlier this month, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) announced plans to create research centers dedicated to emerging technologies, including AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain, across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the agency’s dedication to building a robust technology research ecosystem.

The upcoming research centers will focus on critical areas such as IoT, blockchain, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), additive manufacturing, AI, and robotics. Inuwa stated:

“We are creating a special-purpose vehicle to explore these key areas and set up research centers across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, concentrating on these six emerging technologies.”
