In a groundbreaking move, Lufthansa, one of Europe’s leading airline groups, has ventured into the world of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) with the launch of their loyalty program on the Polygon Network. This innovative program enables passengers to transform their travel experiences into NFTs, unlocking a treasure trove of rewards, including flight upgrades and access to premium airport lounges.
On August 31, Lufthansa introduced the Uptrip mobile application, a collaborative effort between Lufthansa Innovation Hub, the airline’s digital innovation unit, and Miles & More, its frequent flyer program. Through this app, travelers can simply scan their boarding passes and receive NFT trading cards in return. To fully engage with the NFT ecosystem, users must connect their crypto wallets, facilitating the minting and transfer of Uptrip NFTs. As passengers complete specific NFT collections, a world of rewards opens up to them, ranging from luxurious flight upgrades and exclusive airport lounge access to coveted frequent flyer status and generous award miles.
Kristian Weymar, an executive at Lufthansa Innovation Hub, emphasized the nascent stage of Web3 adoption, with users displaying curiosity but often hesitating to fully immerse themselves. The Uptrip project aims to bridge this gap by making Web3 technology accessible to Lufthansa’s valued customers.
Christopher Siegloch, head of program development at Miles & More, revealed that Uptrip has generated significant interest, with over 20,000 sign-ups and an impressive 200,000 NFT trading cards minted. Lufthansa’s foray into the realm of Web3 technology aligns with its earlier expressions of interest in integrating decentralization and tokenization into its business models, as Johannes Walter from Lufthansa Group highlighted in an interview with Cointelegraph earlier this year.
Interestingly, Lufthansa is not the only player in the airline industry exploring the possibilities of Web3 technology. In 2022, Emirates, the largest airline company in the United Arab Emirates, announced plans to accept Bitcoin payments and venture into the world of NFTs. As the aviation industry continues to embrace the potential of blockchain and NFTs, it’s clear that a new era of customer rewards and engagement is taking flight.
