Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has underscored the significance of addressing artificial intelligence (AI) concerns as a key focus during Italy’s G7 presidency, extending from January to December. Notably, Italy, one of the pioneering European nations to effectively restrict OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT, aims to prioritize the discussion on AI-related challenges.
During a press conference on December 4, 2023, Prime Minister Meloni outlined the country’s overarching priorities for the G7 presidency. These include supporting African development, advocating for Ukraine, and delving into the complex realm of artificial intelligence. Expressing apprehension about AI’s impact on the labor market, Meloni emphasized the looming threat of human intellect being supplanted by technology.
While specific AI concerns were not detailed, Meloni disclosed her intention to convene a special AI-focused session for G7 members ahead of the scheduled leaders’ summit in June. Italy’s preoccupation with the implications of AI on employment was evident in its allocation of 30 million euros ($33 million) in May 2023 to the Fondo per la Repubblica Digitale (FRD), aimed at enhancing the skills of the unemployed and those facing potential job displacement due to automation and AI advancements.
In March 2023, the Italian Data Protection Authority took a decisive step by ordering an immediate restriction on data processing for local users by OpenAI, citing concerns about mass data collection and storage without a sufficient legal basis. Although the ban was lifted after ChatGPT met compliance requirements, ongoing scrutiny persisted. In November, the Italian Data Protection Authority initiated a “fact-finding” investigation, examining the practices of data gathering for training AI algorithms, underscoring Italy’s commitment to scrutinizing AI-related activities within its borders.
